Biography
Wenceslaus (907-935) was a Duke of Bohemia who became a martyr and the nation's patron saint. Born into nobility, he was educated in the Christian faith by his grandmother Saint Ludmila. He ruled with justice and worked to strengthen Christianity throughout his realm, earning respect for his piety and fair governance. Despite his mother's opposition to his religious policies, Wenceslaus remained steadfast in his faith. He was murdered by his brother Boleslaus at the Church of Saints Cosmas and Damian in Prague, likely for political and religious reasons. His death transformed him into a symbol of Christian virtue and martyrdom. Wenceslaus became venerated immediately after his death and was canonized as Bohemia's primary patron saint. His legacy profoundly influenced Catholic Central Europe and inspired the famous carol bearing his name.
