Biography

Lawrence Ruiz (1637-1637) was a Japanese-Filipino catechist and the first Filipino saint. He joined the Dominican mission in the Philippines as a young man, eventually traveling to Japan as a missionary despite knowing the danger posed by anti-Christian persecution. Captured and imprisoned, Lawrence endured torture without renouncing his faith. He was martyred by hanging during Japan's fierce suppression of Catholicism in the 17th century. He was canonized alongside sixteen Dominican companions who suffered similar fates in Japan. Their collective martyrdom represents the resilience of Catholic faith in the face of systematic persecution. Lawrence Ruiz stands as a beacon of Filipino Catholic identity and missionary courage, inspiring generations of Asian Catholics. His canonization in 1987 formally recognized the sacrifices of early Asian martyrs.
