Biography

Lorenzo Ruiz (1637-1637) was a Filipino lay missionary and the first Filipino canonized saint. Born in Manila to a Spanish father and Filipino mother, he worked as a sacristan and catechist in the Dominican mission. Facing legal troubles in Manila, he fled to Japan aboard a Dominican missionary ship in 1636. Japan's Tokugawa shogunate had severely restricted Christianity, making missionary work extremely dangerous. Lorenzo was arrested along with other missionaries and subjected to interrogation and torture designed to force apostasy. Refusing to renounce his faith despite horrific suffering, he was executed by tsurushi (hanging upside down) in September 1637 in Nagasaki. His martyrdom exemplified profound faith under extreme persecution. Canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1987, Lorenzo Ruiz represents the first Filipino saint and stands as a powerful witness to Christian witness across cultures, symbolizing the courageous faith of Asian Catholics and mixed-race communities.
