Biography
Wojciech (955-997), known in the West as Adalbert, was a Polish bishop and missionary saint who became the first martyr of Prussia. Born into nobility in Gniezno, he received monastic training and became bishop of Prague around 983. His efforts to reform the Church and oppose simony initially provoked local resistance, forcing him into exile twice. Undeterred, Wojciech dedicated himself to missionary work among pagan peoples on Poland's borders. He traveled extensively, preaching the Gospel to Prussians, Hungarians, and other unconverted peoples. During his final missionary journey in Prussia around 997, Wojciech was captured and executed by pagan warriors. His martyrdom and missionary dedication inspired the conversion of many peoples and established him as a patronal figure for Christianization efforts in Central Europe.
