Biography

Nicholas of Myra (280-343) was a 4th-century Christian bishop in Lycia, modern-day Turkey, renowned for his extraordinary generosity and miraculous deeds. Born to wealthy Christian parents, he devoted himself to serving God and helping the poor, reportedly distributing his entire inheritance to those in need. He became bishop of Myra and earned fame for his compassion, secretly giving gifts to a desperate family with three daughters, preventing their sale into slavery. During the Diocletian persecutions, he was imprisoned but survived to continue his ministry. His reputation for miraculous intervention—protecting sailors at sea, rescuing the innocent from execution, and aiding children—spread throughout the Christian world. Venerated as one of the most popular saints, Nicholas's legacy influenced the figure of Santa Claus and maintains deep cultural significance across Orthodox, Catholic, and other Christian traditions.
