Biography

Joseph was a first-century Jewish carpenter and the earthly father of Jesus Christ. Though the Gospel accounts contain limited biographical detail, Joseph emerges as a man of profound virtue, deep faith, and protective devotion. A descendant of David's royal lineage, he was betrothed to Mary when learning of her miraculous pregnancy. Rather than publicly shaming her as Jewish law permitted, he faithfully accepted the divine plan, protecting both Mary and the Christ Child. Joseph provided Jesus with a stable family, teaching him carpentry, transmitting Jewish traditions, and modeling male virtue. He protected Jesus from Herod's infanticide by fleeing to Egypt, demonstrating courage and obedience to divine guidance. Joseph appears throughout Jesus's infancy narratives as the family's earthly protector and provider. Medieval and modern tradition emphasizes Joseph's spiritual depth—his interior prayer life, sacrifice, and quiet strength.
