Biography
Christopher Magallanes and twenty-two companions were Mexican priests and seminarians murdered during the Cristero War (1926-1929), a period of intense religious persecution in Mexico. Father Magallanes, born in 1869, served as a parish priest and became known for his pastoral care, particularly among indigenous populations. When the government enforced strict anti-clerical laws, he continued celebrating Mass and administering sacraments clandestinely. On May 21, 1927, he was executed by firing squad along with several companions for refusing to abandon his priesthood. His martyrdom exemplified the Mexican clergy's commitment to their faith despite governmental prohibition of religious practice. The group's canonization in 2000 recognized both their heroic witness and the broader suffering of the Mexican Church during this turbulent period, making them particularly significant for Mexican Catholicism.
