Biography
Miguel Agustín Pro (1891-1927) was a Mexican Jesuit priest and martyr who served during the Cristero persecution under President Plutarco Calles. Ordained in 1925, Pro ministered clandestinely to persecuted Catholics when public religious practice was severely restricted. He worked tirelessly hearing confessions, celebrating Mass in secret, and aiding the poor and unemployed despite constant danger. Pro gained renown for his compassionate pastoral work and clever evasion of authorities, often disguising himself. In 1927, he was falsely accused of involvement in an assassination attempt, arrested, and executed by firing squad without trial. His final act—forgiving his executioners with open arms as bullets struck him—exemplified his profound faith. Pro's martyrdom made him a symbol of religious persecution resistance and Catholic courage.
