Biography
Andrew Dung-Lac and his Companions represent 117 Vietnamese martyrs canonized together in 1988, spanning from the sixteenth through nineteenth centuries. Andrew Dung-Lac, a Vietnamese Dominican priest born in the 1790s, was executed by Emperor Tu Duc in 1839 for refusing to abandon his faith and ministry. These martyrs included priests, lay catechists, and ordinary believers who died under repeated persecutions during Vietnam's Catholic history. Many suffered torture, decapitation, or drowning for refusing to renounce Christianity or participate in ancestor veneration rituals conflicting with their faith. Their collective canonization recognized the vibrant Vietnamese Catholic community that persevered through centuries of oppression. These martyrs represent the Church's growth in Asia and the enduring commitment of ordinary faithful to their beliefs despite extreme hardship and death.
