Silouan the Athonite

Biography

Simeon Ivanovich Antonov (1866–1938) became a foundational figure of twentieth-century Orthodox monasticism through his profound mystical theology and unwavering prayer. Entering Mount Athos at age nineteen, he spent decades in ascetic discipline and ceaseless prayer, seeking theosis (union with God). After an initial period of spiritual struggle and demonic assault, he experienced a vision of Christ that transformed his practice toward gentleness and love rather than harsh asceticism. Silouan developed the characteristic Athonite teaching on unceasing Jesus Prayer and the descent of the Holy Spirit into the heart. His emphasis on brotherly love, reconciliation with enemies, and divine compassion reflected authentic Eastern Orthodox spirituality. Though he never traveled beyond Athos, his spiritual influence expanded exponentially through disciples and writings. His most significant legacy came through his student Archimandrite Sophrony, who documented and transmitted Silouan's teachings to the modern world. His teachings on prayer, hesychasm, and Orthodox mysticism remain foundational for contemporary monastic and lay spirituality.
