Biography

Lazar of Serbia (1329-1389) was a Serbian Orthodox monk and military leader who became a symbol of Serbian resistance and martyrdom. Originally educated in Constantinople, he returned to Serbia where he founded the Prilepac Monastery and later became a spiritual leader during a time of Ottoman expansion. When the Ottoman Empire threatened Serbian independence, Lazar took up arms to defend his people, becoming both a spiritual and military figure. At the Battle of Kosovo Field in 1389, Serbian forces under his command confronted the Ottoman army. Though historical accounts vary, Lazar was captured and executed, becoming a martyr for Serbian Christianity and independence. His death transformed him into a legendary figure in Serbian consciousness, embodying resistance to foreign domination and faithfulness unto death. The Serbian Orthodox Church canonized him, and his memory profoundly shaped Serbian national and religious identity for centuries.
