Biography
Marko Križevčanin (1480-1539) was a Serbian Orthodox bishop and martyr who died defending Christian faith during Ottoman occupation. Born in Križevci in the Balkans, he became Bishop of Banija and was recognized for his pastoral dedication and spiritual leadership during one of the most turbulent periods in Serbian church history. Under Ottoman rule, Marko maintained Orthodox Christian practice and ecclesiastical authority despite systematic pressure to convert or compromise faith. According to tradition, he was imprisoned and suffered persecution for his refusal to abandon Orthodox Christianity. He was eventually executed, becoming a martyr to faith during the Ottoman period. His example became significant in Serbian Orthodox spirituality, symbolizing resistance to forced religious conversion and the preservation of Christian identity under occupation. Marko represents the tragic history of Christian communities facing existential threats, and his veneration reflects Serbian Orthodox commitment to maintaining faith through suffering and sacrifice.
