Biography

Porphyrios (1906-1991) was a Greek Orthodox monk and spiritual elder renowned for his extraordinary compassion and mystical gifts. Born Evagoras Kavsos, he lived most of his life in a small hermitage on Mount Athos called Kavsokalyvia. Despite physical hardships and limited formal education, Porphyrios possessed remarkable spiritual depth and the ability to perceive people's innermost struggles. He became a sought-after spiritual father, offering healing counsel to thousands seeking guidance, particularly those wrestling with doubt, trauma, and suffering. His approach combined Orthodox theological wisdom with tender pastoral care. Porphyrios experienced profound mystical encounters with Christ and the saints, which shaped his ministry. Though living austerely, he radiated joy and love that transformed those who encountered him. Canonized in 2003, his legacy continues through his recorded conversations and teachings, which emphasize God's infinite mercy, authentic repentance, and the healing power of genuine faith and relationship with Christ.
