Biography
Polycarp (69-155) was a bishop of Smyrna and a crucial link between the apostolic age and later Christianity. A disciple of John the Apostle, he preserved and transmitted apostolic teachings during the early Church's formative period. He traveled to Rome to discuss Easter observance with Pope Anicetus, demonstrating his authority and commitment to Church unity. Known for his virtuous life and powerful leadership, Polycarp strengthened the faith in Asia Minor during intense persecution. At approximately 86 years old, he was arrested during Emperor Marcus Aurelius's reign. Despite being offered freedom if he renounced Christ, Polycarp famously declared, "Eighty-six years I have served Christ, and He has never wronged me." He was martyred by fire, becoming one of the earliest documented Christian martyrs after the apostles. His letters and example profoundly influenced the developing Christian Church.
