Biography

Matthias (d. c. 80 AD) was chosen as the twelfth apostle replacing Judas Iscariot following the Resurrection. Though he was among Jesus's followers during His ministry, little is recorded of his personal relationship with Christ until his selection by lot in Acts 1:15-26. The early Church recognized Matthias's faithfulness despite the vacancy created by Judas's betrayal, showing that even those less prominent could fulfill crucial apostolic roles. Tradition records that Matthias preached primarily in Judea and later in regions like Ethiopia or Armenia, though accounts vary significantly. According to some sources, he was martyred, either stoned or crucified. His inclusion among the Twelve demonstrates that apostolic calling depends on God's choice rather than human prominence. Matthias exemplifies redemptive restoration and the principle that anyone, regardless of prior obscurity, can become instrumental in Christ's mission.
