Biography

Marcellinus and Peter were early Roman martyrs, likely executed during the Diocletian persecution around 304 AD. Marcellinus was a priest and Peter a deacon, both serving in Rome with deep pastoral commitment. According to tradition, their friendship exemplified Christian brotherly love, and they maintained faith despite severe torture designed to make them renounce Christianity. They were imprisoned together, encouraging one another spiritually. Their martyrdom occurred via decapitation on the Salarian Way outside Rome. Though details are partly legendary, their cult was ancient and widespread, and Pope Damasus I (366-384) honored their memory with verses. A church was eventually built over their burial place. They became symbols of apostolic fidelity and the power of Christian friendship to sustain believers through persecution. Their joint feast commemorates both individual witness and communal support in faith.
