Biography

Lawrence was a deacon in Rome under Pope Sixtus II during Emperor Valerian's persecution of Christians in 258 AD. When ordered to surrender the Church's treasures, Lawrence gathered the poor and sick he served, presenting them as the true riches of the Church. According to tradition, he was martyred by being roasted on a gridiron, maintaining his faith and composure throughout his torture. His final words, reportedly joking that he was done on one side and should be turned over, exemplified his remarkable spiritual strength and humor in the face of death. Lawrence's feast day, Lammas, became significant in medieval agricultural calendars. His courageous witness to charity and defiance of imperial authority made him one of the most venerated early Christian martyrs, inspiring countless believers throughout history.
