Biography

Joachim and Anne were the parents of Mary, the Mother of Jesus, though they are not mentioned in the canonical Gospels. Their account comes primarily from the apocryphal Protoevangelium of James, a second-century Christian text. According to tradition, Joachim was a wealthy and righteous man from Nazareth, while Anne came from Jerusalem. They remained childless for many years, causing them social shame in Jewish culture. Through steadfast prayer and divine intervention, Anne miraculously conceived Mary in her advanced age. Some accounts suggest an angel announced her birth. Joachim and Anne raised Mary with exceptional piety, training her in religious observance and virtue. They died before Jesus's public ministry began, thus never meeting their grandson directly. Though they never achieved canonical beatification status during the early Church, Joachim and Anne became venerated across Christianity as models of faithful parenthood and grandparenthood. Their feast day celebrates their crucial role as ancestors of Christ and examples of patient hope in divine providence. They represent spiritual parenthood, family values, and the transformative power of faith and prayer.
