Biography

Gianna Beretta Molla (1922-1962) was an Italian pediatrician and mother whose holiness was exemplified through her devotion to family, medicine, and faith. Born in Magenta, Italy, she earned a medical degree and practiced pediatrics, bringing compassionate care to children while integrating her Catholic faith into her professional ethics. In 1955, she married Pietro Molla and embraced motherhood with spiritual intentionality, having three children while continuing medical practice. During her fourth pregnancy in 1961, Gianna discovered a uterine fibroid tumor requiring treatment. Though aware that certain treatments could endanger her unborn child, she refused therapies threatening the baby's life, choosing instead procedures less likely to harm the developing fetus. She proceeded with pregnancy, but complications intensified. Despite severe suffering, she remained committed to protecting her child. Gianna gave birth to a healthy daughter but died from peritonitis nine days later, having sacrificed her life for her unborn child. Her death manifested heroic virtue—the deliberate choice to prioritize another's life despite personal mortal risk. Canonized in 2004, she became the first saint canonized in the twenty-first century, exemplifying holiness through motherhood and medical practice.
