Biography

Bartholomew, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus, is traditionally identified as Nathanael in the Gospel of John. Called by Jesus through Philip's introduction, he became a devoted follower and witnessed Christ's ministry, passion, and resurrection. After Pentecost, Bartholomew undertook missionary travels, according to tradition spreading the Gospel in Asia Minor, Egypt, and Armenia. He reportedly preached alongside Philip and endured persecution for his faith. The manner of his martyrdom varies in tradition—some accounts describe flaying, others crucifixion—but his commitment to spreading Christianity remained absolute despite severe trials. Bartholomew's prominence among the apostles reflects his reliability and spiritual depth. His relics were traditionally associated with various locations throughout Christian history, and he became venerated across Eastern and Western Christianity as a faithful witness to Christ's resurrection and a model of apostolic dedication.
