Biography

Angela Merici (1474-1540) was an Italian educator and mystic who founded the Ursuline Order, revolutionizing girls' education and religious life. Widowed early and inspired by mystical visions, she became a tertiary of the Third Order of Saint Francis, dedicating herself to serving the poor and marginalized. Recognizing the critical need for girls' education in Renaissance Italy, Angela established her first community in Brescia in 1535, initially comprising twenty-eight young women committed to educating girls, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Her innovative approach emphasized women's intellectual development and spiritual formation as inseparable. The Ursuline Order rapidly expanded throughout Europe, becoming the first major religious community specifically devoted to girls' education. Despite physical blindness in her later years, Angela's spiritual vision remained sharp, guiding her community through letters and personal counsel. Canonized in 1807, Angela transformed Catholic education by demonstrating that teaching was a sacred vocation equal to contemplative monasticism. Her legacy fundamentally reshaped women's religious life and established education as essential Catholic ministry.
