Biography
Saint Agatha was a Sicilian virgin martyr of the 3rd century who refused the advances of the Roman proconsul Quintianus. When she rejected his proposals, he had her arrested and tortured for her Christian faith and her resistance to his lustful demands. According to tradition, her breasts were cut off during her torture, and she was subsequently rolled over hot coals. She died in prison around 251 CE, likely during the Decian persecution. Her devotion to Christ and virginity made her a model of Christian steadfastness. Agatha became venerated throughout Sicily and the Mediterranean, particularly in Sicily where she is the principal patroness. Her feast day falls on February 5th, and she is one of few female saints mentioned in the Canon of the Roman Mass, indicating her early importance to the Church.
