Roque González

Biografia

Roque González (1576-1628) was a Spanish Jesuit missionary who devoted his life to evangelizing the Guaraní people of Paraguay. Born in Córdoba, Spain, he joined the Jesuits and was sent to South America where he mastered the Guaraní language and adapted Christian teachings to indigenous understanding. He founded several Jesuit reductions (settlements) that became models of religious community life, blending Christian practice with indigenous social structures. González worked tirelessly to protect indigenous peoples from exploitation by Spanish colonists. His success in winning converts and establishing stable Christian communities made him a threat to those profiting from indigenous slavery. He was martyred in 1628 by indigenous groups influenced by rival factions. His legacy established the Jesuit mission model that shaped colonial Paraguay.
