Biografia
Origen (185-254 AD) was one of Christianity's most brilliant and prolific theologians, based in Alexandria. Head of the Catechetical School of Alexandria, he revolutionized biblical exegesis through his allegorical method of scriptural interpretation. Origen produced the Hexapla, a monumental comparative edition of Hebrew and Greek biblical texts, and wrote extensive theological commentaries that shaped Christian thought for centuries. His intellectual contributions addressed fundamental theological questions about God's nature, human free will, and salvation. However, his speculative theology—particularly his concept of apokatastasis (universal reconciliation) and his pre-existence of souls—generated considerable controversy. Origen lived ascetically, reportedly castrating himself in pursuit of spiritual discipline. During Emperor Decius's persecutions, he was imprisoned and tortured. Though released, the ordeal permanently damaged his health. His legacy remained complex: deeply revered for his scholarship yet suspect for doctrinal innovations. Posthumously, some of his teachings were condemned at councils, yet his influence on biblical scholarship and theological methodology remained immense.
