Biografia

Josaphat Kuntsevych was a Ukrainian-born Greek Catholic metropolitan who died a martyr in 1623. Ordained as a bishop, he worked tirelessly to strengthen the Eastern Catholic Church and promote unity between Eastern and Western Christian traditions. Known for his deep spirituality, pastoral devotion, and commitment to liturgical precision, Josaphat traveled throughout his diocese ministering to the faithful. His efforts to reform church practices and his fidelity to Rome attracted opposition from schismatic factions who viewed his unionizing efforts as Western contamination. In 1623, he was brutally attacked and martyred by an angry mob during a conflict over ecclesiastical jurisdiction. His martyrdom became a defining moment for Eastern Catholic identity. Canonized in 1867, he remains the first Eastern Catholic saint to receive this honor.
