Biografia

Herman of Alaska (1756-1837) was a Russian Orthodox monk who became the first major Orthodox missionary to Alaska. Arriving in 1794 as part of a monastic expedition, he established himself on Spruce Island near Kodiak, where he spent over four decades serving the Tlingit and Aleut peoples. Herman founded a school for indigenous children, advocated fiercely for their rights against exploitative fur traders, and lived an ascetic life of prayer and manual labor. He earned the deep respect of native populations through his genuine care for their spiritual and physical welfare, learning their languages and customs. Despite his lack of formal episcopal authority, Herman became the de facto spiritual leader of Alaska's Orthodox community. He performed miracles attributed to divine intervention and maintained an extensive correspondence documenting missionary life. His canonization in 1969 by the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia recognized his profound impact on Alaskan religious history.
