Zdenka Schelingová (1916-1955) was a Slovak nun and martyr who died resisting communist persecution. A member of the Ursuline order, she was imprisoned and tortured by the communist regime in Czechoslovakia for refusing to renounce her religious vows and cooperate with atheistic authorities. During her imprisonment, she endured brutal interrogations and attempted indoctrination while maintaining her faith with extraordinary courage. She died in prison at age 38, her health destroyed by torture and harsh conditions. Zdenka exemplified Christian resistance to totalitarian oppression during the Cold War. She was beatified in 2003, recognized as a martyr for religious freedom. Her witness inspired countless Catholics under communist rule to maintain their faith despite persecution. Her cause for canonization continues to be studied by the Church.
