Životopis

Simeon Stylites (c. 390-459) was a Syrian Christian ascetic renowned for his extraordinary spiritual discipline. Beginning his monastic life in conventional settings, Simeon progressively intensified his ascetical practices, eventually settling atop a pillar near Aleppo around 423 CE. He spent approximately thirty-seven years living on pillars of increasing heights—the final reaching sixty feet—exposed to all weather, eating minimal food, and dedicating himself entirely to prayer and contemplation. This radical lifestyle attracted thousands of pilgrims seeking his spiritual wisdom and intercession. Despite his isolation, Simeon became deeply influential in the early Church, corresponding with emperors and bishops, and his ascetic witness inspired numerous imitators. His extreme practices, though challenging to modern sensibilities, reflected intense devotion and desire for union with God. He died in 459 CE, revered as one of Christianity's most extraordinary ascetics.
