Peter of Alcántara (1499–1562) was a Spanish Franciscan friar renowned for extraordinary asceticism and mystical spirituality. He adopted extreme practices including minimal sleep, sparse diet, and rigorous self-mortification, believing suffering united him to Christ's passion. Despite physical hardship, he achieved profound contemplative prayer and mystical experiences. Peter established the Discalced Franciscans, emphasizing strict poverty and contemplative discipline, influencing religious reform movements. He served as spiritual director to Saint Teresa of Ávila, mutually recognizing each other's sanctity. His writings on prayer and spiritual development became influential throughout Christendom.
