Narcisa de Jesús Martillo Morán was born in 1832 in Ecuador. From childhood, she experienced profound mystical visions and spiritual experiences alongside severe bodily sufferings, which she accepted as participation in Christ's passion. Though she wished to enter religious life, her family circumstances and health prevented this path. Instead, Narcisa devoted herself to prayer, nursing the sick, and catechizing indigenous peoples. Her mystical gifts included ecstasies and supernatural knowledge. She suffered various illnesses and disabilities while maintaining unwavering faith and apostolic zeal for spreading the Gospel. Narcisa died in 1869. Canonized in 2008, she became Ecuador's first native-born female saint. Her life demonstrates how lay women can achieve sanctity through embracing suffering and serving their communities, particularly indigenous populations.
