Životopis
Mary of Egypt was born in the 4th or 5th century and spent her early life as a courtesan in Alexandria, living a life of sensuality and sin. At age twenty-nine, she impulsively joined pilgrims journeying to Jerusalem, seeking spiritual experience. In the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, she experienced a profound conversion when mysteriously unable to enter, recognizing her unworthiness. Following an inner calling, Mary fled to the desert east of the Jordan River, where she spent forty-seven years in extreme solitude and penance, sustained by three loaves of bread and occasional wild vegetation. Her severe ascetical practices—fasting, prayer, and battle against demonic temptations—became legendary. She was eventually discovered by Abba Zosimas, a monk seeking solitude, who recorded her remarkable story before her death around 421 CE.
