Životopis

Laura Montoya (1874-1949) was a Colombian nun and missionary who founded the Congregation of Mary Immaculate. Born in Jericó, Antioquia, she devoted her life to evangelizing indigenous communities in remote regions of Colombia and Ecuador. Recognizing the need for culturally appropriate missionary work, she established schools and trained indigenous catechists to spread the Gospel within their own communities. Her approach emphasized respect for indigenous cultures while promoting Christian education. Despite facing numerous hardships, including difficult terrain and limited resources, she expanded her congregation's work throughout South America. Her legacy transformed missionary practice by prioritizing indigenous agency and cultural integration. She was canonized in 2003, becoming the first Colombian saint.
