Životopis
John of Damascus (c. 675-749) was a Syrian theologian, hymnographer, and defender of Christian orthodoxy whose influence shaped medieval and modern theology. Born into a Christian Arab family with high administrative status under Islamic rule, he eventually renounced worldly position to become a monk at the monastery of Saint Sabas near Jerusalem. John became the first major Christian thinker to engage systematically with Islamic theology, writing apologetic works demonstrating Christianity's rational coherence. Most significantly, he vigorously defended the veneration of sacred images against Iconoclasm, the heretical movement that condemned icon worship. His three orations on images provided theological justification for the practice, arguing that honoring an image honors the one depicted. John compiled Christian doctrine into the Exact Exposition of the Orthodox Faith, an early systematic theology that profoundly influenced both Eastern and Western Christian thought. His hymnographic work produced enduring liturgical texts still sung in churches today. Despite criticism from both Christian and Islamic opponents, John's theological syntheses and passionate advocacy for orthodoxy secured him veneration as a Doctor of the Church.
