Životopis
Eric IX (c. 1110-1160), known as Eric the Saint, was King of Sweden who became the nation's patron saint. He is credited with leading a crusade into Finland around 1157 to Christianize the region and establish Swedish influence, earning him veneration as a missionary king. Eric combined political leadership with deep Christian devotion, earning respect for his just governance and religious commitment. He established churches and monasteries throughout his realm and worked to reform the Swedish Church according to Christian principles. According to tradition, Eric was murdered in 1160 by Danish forces in revenge for his crusading activities, making him a martyr for the faith. Though historical details about his canonization process are sparse, his cult developed rapidly in medieval Sweden, and he became the country's most important saint. His feast day has been celebrated since the medieval period, and his legacy represents the Christianization of Scandinavia.
