Erasmus, also known as Elmo, was a bishop and Christian missionary who lived during the late 3rd century. Originally from Syria, he preached Christianity throughout the Mediterranean region despite severe persecution. He endured multiple tortures under Roman emperors Diocletian and Maximian, including being stretched on a rack and having his organs wound around a windlass—a torture that explains his association with abdominal ailments. According to tradition, he was imprisoned and miraculously escaped to Formia in Italy, where he continued his ministry. He was martyred in Formia around 303 AD. His veneration among sailors developed because of St. Elmo's Fire, a meteorological phenomenon that sailors interpreted as his protective presence. He became one of the most beloved saints of seafarers throughout Christian history.
