Andrew of Crete (660-740) was a Byzantine theologian and hymnographer who served as Archbishop of Gortyna in Crete. Born in Damascus, he studied under Saint John of Damascus and became renowned for his extensive theological writings and liturgical contributions. He composed the Great Canon of Repentance, a monumental penitential work still central to Orthodox Holy Week observances. Andrew's scholarly works addressed Christological controversies and defended orthodox doctrine during turbulent theological debates. He faced persecution during the Iconoclastic period for his defense of sacred images, demonstrating steadfast commitment to the faith. His homilies and theological treatises earned him recognition as one of the most important ecclesiastical writers of his era, significantly shaping Byzantine liturgical and theological traditions.
