Biografía
Vasily Ivanovich Bellavin (1865–1925) became Patriarch of Moscow during the Russian Revolution's upheaval. Ordained a priest in 1891, he served as missionary bishop in the Philippines and later as metropolitan of Moscow. Elected Patriarch in 1917, he courageously opposed Bolshevik persecution of the Church while advocating for Orthodox unity. Despite imprisonment and suffering under communist rule, he worked tirelessly to preserve the faith and reorganize the decimated Russian Church. His patriarchate lasted until his death, during which he endured house arrest and witnessed widespread martyrdom of clergy. Tikhon's steadfast leadership during catastrophic persecution established him as a beacon of Orthodox resistance and spiritual fortitude. He canonized numerous martyrs and strengthened ecclesiastical discipline. His legacy remains central to Russian Orthodox identity and the Church's survival through communist oppression.
