Paul the Apostle (c. 5-67 AD) was a Jewish Pharisee named Saul who became Christianity's most influential missionary and theologian. After witnessing the stoning of Stephen, Saul persecuted Christians until experiencing a dramatic conversion near Damascus, transforming him into an ardent apostle. He traveled extensively throughout the Mediterranean establishing churches and writing epistles that form a substantial portion of the New Testament. Paul's letters address theology, ethics, church governance, and Christian living with unprecedented depth. His missionary journeys took him to Asia Minor, Greece, and Rome despite constant opposition, imprisonment, and physical hardship. He championed the inclusion of Gentiles in the Church, fundamentally shaping Christian identity. Paul's theology emphasizes justification by faith, grace, and union with Christ. Tradition holds he was martyred in Rome under Nero. His contributions to Christian doctrine, scriptural canon, and missiology remain foundational to Christianity.
