Biografía

José Gregorio Hernández Cisneros (1864–1919) was a Venezuelan physician, educator, and martyr whose life exemplified the integration of medical science with Christian charity. After medical studies, he became a pioneering healthcare provider, establishing clinics for the poor and dedicating himself to treating marginalized patients regardless of their ability to pay. He combined advanced medical knowledge with pastoral sensitivity, viewing medicine as an expression of Christ's healing love. During Venezuela's political instability, Hernández continued his missionary medical work, earning widespread respect and veneration among common people who called him "El Santo Médico" (The Saint Doctor). On June 3, 1919, he was killed in Caracas, apparently by political violence. His death elevated him to martyr status in popular devotion. Hernández represents the sanctity possible within professional medicine when practiced with supernatural motivation. His canonization reflects the Church's recognition of healthcare as a sacred vocation.
