Biografía

Saint Dymphna was a 7th-century Irish princess whose life exemplifies courage in the face of familial trauma. Born to an Irish Christian king and a Frankish mother, she received religious education from a local priest. When her mother died, her father, driven by madness and grief, developed an incestuous desire for his daughter. Rather than submit, Dymphna fled to Flanders with her confessor, Father Gerebran. They settled in Geel, where she lived a life of quiet prayer and service to the mentally afflicted. Her father pursued and found her, ultimately beheading her when she refused to return. Though her historical details remain somewhat uncertain, medieval tradition credits her intercession with miraculous healings of mental illness. She became deeply venerated in Geel, where a sanctuary was built and the mentally ill sought her aid for centuries.
