Anna Schäffer (1894-1925) was a German Catholic lay woman who transformed severe suffering into profound spiritual witness. Born in Unterreichbach, Bavaria, Anna worked as a domestic servant until a tragic accident in 1911 left her with severe burns and chronic illness. She spent the remaining fourteen years of her life largely bedridden, enduring constant pain without medical relief. Rather than despair, Anna accepted her suffering as spiritual participation in Christ's Passion and offered it for the Church and sinners' conversion. Despite her confinement, she maintained remarkable joy, corresponded extensively with others, and became known for her spiritual wisdom and compassionate counsel. Anna's letters reveal deep mystical insights and unwavering faith despite her physical anguish. She experienced several religious visions and stigmata phenomena. Her spiritual director recognized her extraordinary holiness and documented her life meticulously. Anna died at age thirty, her suffering complete but her influence enduring. Canonized in 2000, Anna Schäffer exemplifies how chronic illness and disability need not diminish spiritual fruitfulness, offering comfort to those suffering similar afflictions.
