Biography
Turibius was born in 1538 in Spain and became a renowned legal scholar and administrator. Appointed Archbishop of Lima in 1581, he arrived in Peru without previous ecclesiastical experience but proved an exceptional pastoral leader. He traveled extensively throughout his vast archdiocese, visiting remote parishes to evangelize indigenous peoples and combat corruption among clergy. Turibius learned indigenous languages including Quechua and Aymara, enabling direct communication with native populations. He established seminaries, enforced clerical discipline, and presided over the Third Council of Lima, which standardized religious instruction and missionary methods across South America. His tireless dedication to the poor and marginalized, combined with his reformist vision, transformed the Peruvian Church. He died in 1606, having served as a model of missionary bishop for the Counter-Reformation Church.
