Biography

Thomas, called 'Didymus' (the twin), was an apostle whose initial doubt about Jesus' resurrection became the foundation for profound Christian faith. Though present during Jesus' earthly ministry, Thomas famously insisted on tangible evidence of the resurrection, declaring he would not believe unless he touched Jesus' wounds himself. When Christ appeared to him with the invitation to verify his resurrection, Thomas uttered Christianity's most profound Christological proclamation: 'My Lord and my God!' His journey from skepticism to absolute conviction demonstrates faith's authentic development through honest questioning. Ancient tradition holds that Thomas subsequently traveled to India, where he established Christian communities that survive today as the Saint Thomas Christians of Kerala. He allegedly faced martyrdom in Mylapore, South India, by lance or arrow. Thomas exemplifies how genuine doubt, when confronted with truth, becomes the doorway to transformative faith, making him the patron of inquirers and seekers.
