Biography

Born in 1381 in Cascia, Italy, Rita of Cascia became known as the saint of impossible causes. Forced into marriage at age twelve, she endured her husband's infidelity and abusive behavior for eighteen years with remarkable patience and forgiveness. After his assassination, she pursued religious life, joining an Augustinian convent where she experienced mystical encounters and bore stigmata, particularly a wound on her forehead resembling the crown of thorns. Rita's intercession became legendary; she reportedly obtained miraculous solutions to seemingly hopeless situations. Her spirituality emphasized redemptive suffering—the redemptive value of pain when united with Christ's passion. She was canonized in 1900 and has become venerated especially by those in difficult marriages or facing seemingly insurmountable problems. Rita's life demonstrates the transformative power of forgiveness and patient endurance within suffering.
