Biography

Philip (d. c. 87 AD) was one of Jesus's twelve apostles, chosen directly by Christ at the beginning of His ministry. A native of Bethsaida, Philip was instrumental in spreading the Gospel, particularly among Greek-speaking peoples. According to tradition, he preached in Phrygia (modern-day Turkey) and performed miraculous healings that converted thousands. Philip married and had children, living as a devoted family man while advancing the faith. He is credited with bringing Nathanael to Jesus and with bringing the faith to Greeks seeking Jesus before His Passion. Tradition holds that Philip was martyred in Hierapolis, crucified upside-down for refusing to abandon his missionary work. His legacy emphasizes the apostolic mission to evangelize all peoples regardless of background.
