Biography
Paul of the Cross (1694-1775) was an Italian mystic and founder of the Congregation of the Passion. Experiencing a dramatic spiritual awakening as a youth, he devoted himself to living the Passion of Christ through prayer, penance, and service to the suffering. In 1720, he founded the Passionists, a religious community emphasizing contemplation of Christ's suffering and pastoral outreach to the poor. Paul was a gifted spiritual director and preacher, conducting missionary work throughout Italy. He experienced profound mystical states and visions, documented in his spiritual writings. His spirituality centered on meditating the Passion as a pathway to intimate union with God. He emphasized that suffering, when united with Christ's redemptive suffering, becomes transformative. Paul canonized numerous disciples as future saints. His community expanded significantly, establishing missions and educational institutions. Paul exemplifies how intense contemplative spirituality can coexist with active missionary engagement and institutional leadership.
