Biography
Our Lady of Mount Carmel commemorates the Virgin Mary's special relationship with the Carmelite order, whose roots trace to hermits living on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land during the twelfth century. These contemplative monks chose Mary as their patroness and built a shrine to her on the sacred mountain. The tradition holds that Mary appeared to Saint Simon Stock, a Carmelite superior, promising spiritual protection and salvation to those devoutly wearing the brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. This apparition reinforced the order's Marian devotion and created a powerful sacramental associated with Carmelite spirituality. The scapular became widely distributed to lay devotees, extending Marian protection beyond the cloister. Mount Carmel itself holds profound biblical significance as the place where Elijah encountered God, and the Carmelites view their contemplative tradition as continuing this prophetic encounter. The feast celebrates Mary's maternal care for all souls, particularly her protection of those dedicated to the Carmelite charism of prayer and spiritual solitude.
