Biography

Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre is Cuba's patroness, with origins in the copper mining region of Santiago de Cuba during the 17th century. According to tradition, three men—two indigenous and one African enslaved person—encountered a small statue of Mary floating in the sea during a storm, which miraculously dried itself. The discovery occurred near El Cobre mines, and the statue was enshrined in a sanctuary where extraordinary healings and spiritual graces reportedly occurred. The devotion flourished among enslaved peoples, miners, and the impoverished, offering consolation amid suffering and oppression. Our Lady of Charity became inseparable from Cuban spiritual identity and cultural resistance. In 1977, Pope Paul VI crowned the statue, elevating the devotion's official recognition. The sanctuary remains a pilgrimage destination attracting Cubans seeking maternal intercession and protection. This Marian mystery powerfully expresses how the Virgin's compassion transcends social boundaries, offering spiritual solace to marginalized populations.
