Biography
Norbert (c. 1080-1134) was a German noble-born canon who underwent dramatic spiritual conversion after a near-fatal riding accident around 1115. Previously worldly and self-indulgent, he became an ascetic preacher advocating apostolic poverty and moral reform. After initial resistance from church authorities, he was eventually endorsed by Pope Gelasius II. Norbert founded the Premonstratensian Order (Norbertines) around 1120, establishing communities of canons regular living under strict poverty, chastity, and obedience while engaging in pastoral ministry. The order spread rapidly across Europe, combining monastic rigor with active apostolic work. As Archbishop of Magdeburg from 1126, Norbert worked to reform clergy corruption and strengthen church discipline in his diocese. He faced numerous conflicts with secular nobles but remained committed to ecclesiastical independence. Norbert exemplifies dramatic conversion, the religious renewal movement of the twelfth century, and the creation of new monastic communities serving the Church's missionary and pastoral needs.
