Biography

Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647-1690) was a French Visitation nun whose mystical visions of Christ's Sacred Heart established this devotion as central to modern Catholic spirituality. After years of spiritual struggle and physical illness, she experienced profound mystical encounters beginning in 1673, during which Christ allegedly revealed His burning love for humanity and desire for devotional reparation. Through her visions, Christ communicated the 'Holy Hour,' Eucharistic adoration, and feast-day celebrations honoring the Sacred Heart. Though initially dismissed by her community and ecclesiastical authorities, her spiritual director eventually validated her experiences. Margaret Mary endured deep isolation, physical suffering, and spiritual desolation while faithfully promoting the devotion through correspondence and personal witness. Her writings, particularly her autobiography, clearly articulated the theology of Sacred Heart spirituality. After her death, the devotion rapidly expanded throughout Catholicism, becoming one of the nineteenth century's most widespread practices, profoundly shaping Catholic piety and theology.
